Bad Breath

We have all been there—whether it’s right after you wake up, after your morning coffee or perhaps a spicy meal, when you wake up, or maybe when you’re sick—you start to talk, and whoever you’re talking to backs away. We have all been victims of bad breath at some point in our lives. Bad breath, also called halitosis, is a condition that affects millions of people nationwide every single day. Generally, bad breath is caused by bacteria in the mouth, but can have a variety of origins. Below are a few reasons you may be experiencing bad breath.

Poor Oral Hygiene

Poor oral hygiene is the most common cause of bad breath. When you don’t take proper care of your oral health by regularly brushing and flossing your teeth and making trips to the dentist, you could be failing to clean off bacteria and sugar which can cause decay. The saliva in your mouth often helps wash away bacteria that cause halitosis. However, during sleep, your glands reduce saliva production, which allows bacteria to build up and create more potential for bad breath. This is where “morning breath” comes from.
Poor oral hygiene can also lead to gingivitis and gum disease. Bacteria under your gums associated with gingivitis and gum disease will often lead to halitosis. This is just one more reason to keep up on proper dental health. Flossing is the best thing you can do to fight gum disease, aside from getting your teeth and gums checked regularly by a dentist. If you don’t like to floss, you can invest in a Waterpik, which uses a stream of water to clean between your teeth rather than traditional dental floss.

Dry Mouth

Dry mouth caused by illness, dehydration, and smoking can cause bad breath as well. The reason for this is mentioned above—a lack of saliva washing away the bacteria in your mouth allows them to grow and multiply, making your breath worse. Smoking can leave your breath smelling like tobacco products, but these products also lead to tooth decay and oral health problems, which causes the progression of halitosis. Certain medications may cause dry mouth as well. To combat dry mouth, consider a saliva-activating mouth rinse such as Biotène®.

For families struggling to make it by, the prospect of proper dental care is rarely a priority. For thousands of Americans, money is tight, which means that they have to pick and choose what they spend their limited dollars on. Living paycheck to paycheck, a lack of insurance, and crippling debt plague a number of our own neighbors. It’s hard to justify paying for good dental care when the opportunity cost is rent, medicine, or even food.
Chicagoland is home to hundreds of these hardworking families who have difficulty making ends meet. Take a mother who wakes up at four in the morning to start one of two jobs. She works for a wage that covers rent, food, and child care, but not much more. Or consider the young professional with college debt whose new job doesn’t offer dental insurance. Or a family living under the poverty line, looking for shelter for the next night—dental checkups are the last thing on their mind. There are number of reasons people may be passing up dental care, and for those where money is the issue, Dentistry From The Heart has the solution.
For over fourteen years, Dentistry From The Heart has provided free dental care to those in need. Dental professionals, hygienists, volunteers, and office staff members across the country have donated their time and their skills to host Dentistry From The Heart events to give thousands of dollars-worth of free dental care to their communities.
On Sunday, June 12th, Pure Dental Spa will be hosting its third annual Dentistry From The Heart event at the Bloomingdale location. Patients will be given the option to choose between a free extraction, filling, or cleaning, depending on their personal needs.
Dr. Rajul Patel, DDS. has served the community with Dentistry From The Heart for three years and plans to continue this endeavor for years to come. Giving back to the community that supports Pure Dental Spa is a top priority for Dr. Patel. Registration will begin at 7:00 am and go through 11:00 am. The line gets long, so patients will be waiting outside to receive care. If you’re planning to join us, dress appropriately for the weather! Bring water or snacks with you, and blankets or lawn chairs for your comfort. Patients will be brought into the office in groups of four to receive treatment.
Everyone deserves a fantastic smile, regardless of their income, insurance situation, or social status. Come to Pure Dental Spa in Bloomingdale on June 12th to receive free dental care, courtesy of Dr. Rajul Patel, DDS. and Dentistry From The Heart. The smiles are on us!
