Misalignment in the jaw and teeth are more common than you may think. Many people exhibit some form of cross bite, overbite, or underbite when their teeth develop. This is called malocclusion, or “bad bite.” However, if your malocclusion is drastic then it could directly affect your physical and mental health! Here are the different types of malocclusion and their effects:
A crossbite is when some of your upper teeth fall inside your lower teeth on one side when you bite down. This is often due to genetics or formed during childhood when baby teeth grow into the mouth incorrectly. Those with a crossbite could suffer tooth decay, gum disease and/or stress on the jaw muscles, which leads to headaches and chronic jaw, neck, shoulder, and back pain. If the crossbite is not corrected by an orthodontist, the face may also grow asymmetrically.
An overbite is recognized by an excessive degree of overlap from the upper teeth over the lower teeth. It is common to have a small overbite, but a deep overbite is considered approximately 4 to 10 millimeters deep. This malocclusion is typically due to a recessive chin, or push back from the upper teeth towards the jaw point. Overbites are often accompanied with headaches and clenching/grinding of teeth. When they are corrected, the face often extends from a more circular to a more oval shape. If you are currently suffering from an overbite, our experienced orthodontist can give you solutions you need.
An underbite is recognized by an excess overlap from the lower teeth over the upper teeth. This condition may be caused by the protrusion of the lower jaw, causing the lower teeth to be unaligned with the upper teeth. Underbites can also be formed during childhood when kids persistently continue behaviors like thumb-sucking or the persistent thrusting of the tongue against the lower teeth. Symptoms can affect your ability to properly chew food or speak clearly. Additionally, jaw pain, headaches, earaches, and the wear of tooth enamel are common side effects.
