In most cases, root canals are needed when a tooth has become infected with bacteria. You will start to feel sensitivity to hot or cold foods, you may develop a toothache, or your face, gums or neck may swell up in reaction to the infection. Treatment of an infected tooth is called a root canal. Inside of a tooth, there is a tissue called the “pulp” that lies underneath the enamel and layer of dentin. The pulp contains blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue and serves as the surrounding hard tissue of the tooth during development. The pulp extends from the crown of the tooth to the tip of the roots where it connects to the tissues surrounding the root.
Endodontic treatment (or root canal therapy) is necessary when the pulp becomes inflamed or infected, often due to deep decay, a crack or chip in the tooth. If left untreated, it can cause pain or lead to an abscess and may cause for removal of the problem tooth. To avoid this more drastic outcome it’s important that you not ignore any tooth pain or discomfort. When possible, make a reservation to see Dr. Patel for proper diagnosis; she will make sure that your pain is addressed quickly and effectively!
